Maputo, Mozambique – On July 2, 2015, Rebound Technologies met with 20 researchers and farmers at the Mozambique Institute of Agricultural Research (IIAM) to present the SunChill™ technology and to solicit direct feedback regarding technology. SunChill™ pre-chills harvested crops, using solar energy, which reduces the amount of power required for cold storage equipment and drops annual energy consumption by up to 60 percent. Horticultural harvest studies have demonstrated that immediate removal of heat from crops after harvest can as much as double shelf life, while reducing spoilage rates by up to 40 percent.

Jack Darrah and Sean Ryan, representing Rebound, are currently reconstructing the prototype, using primarily locally available materials, at Mozambique Organicos, a farm in the Inhambane province. Mozambique Organicos is a for-profit farm, which supports local farmers while also serving as an incubator for teaching farming skills to local women. The feedback received during the demonstration will be incorporated into design.

Development of this novel, off-grid refrigeration solution was made possible by an award from Powering Agriculture: An Energy Grand Challenge for Development (PAEGC). Powering Agriculture supports new and sustainable approaches to accelerate the development and deployment of clean energy solutions for increasing agriculture productivity and/or value in developing countries.

Rebound Technologies develops tailored refrigeration technologies designed to meet global energy market dynamics while reducing fossil fuel dependence. Rebound designed, built, and tested the SunChill™ prototype in Fort Collins, Colorado, at Colorado State University’s Powerhouse Energy Campus. This is the final phase of a 2.5 year project.
